Our Story

Built by Neighbors,
for Neighbors

The Shannondale Shortlist started with a frustration most people in this community know well — and a simple idea to fix it.

If you've lived in Shannondale for more than a minute, you've probably posted something like this to one of the neighborhood Facebook groups:

"Does anyone know a good plumber in the area? Need help ASAP."

You get 30 responses. Half of them are for someone's cousin who "does great work." Two of the phone numbers are disconnected. One person shows up three weeks late and ghosts you after the estimate. Another doesn't carry insurance and you don't find out until after they've started.

It's not that there aren't great contractors serving Shannondale and Harpers Ferry — there absolutely are. The problem is that finding them has always relied on luck, persistence, and knowing the right people. That's especially frustrating when you're a busy professional, a retiree managing an older mountain home, or an Airbnb owner trying to keep things running smoothly from a distance.

We know this firsthand. We've been Shannondale residents long enough to know this community — the neighbors, the back roads, the quirks of these older homes, and which contractors actually show up. We've found the ones who are genuinely excellent and noticed they have no online presence, no way for new neighbors to find them, and no platform that reflects how good they really are.

That's why we built the Shannondale Shortlist.

Not as a tech company. Not as a marketing platform. Just as neighbors who wanted to create the thing we'd always wished existed — a carefully curated, community-rooted directory of people you can actually trust. Built for Shannondale first, and extending naturally to Harpers Ferry, Bolivar, Charles Town, Shepherdstown, and the surrounding communities we're all connected to.

Every provider on this list has been reviewed personally. We check licenses and insurance where applicable. We call references. We ask our neighbors. And for the providers we've hired ourselves — the ones we'd stake our own reputation on — we give them our Founder's Pick, with a personal note from us explaining exactly why.

This will never be a place where you can pay to get listed. It will never be driven by algorithms or ad revenue. It's a community resource — built on trust, maintained by real people, and dedicated to this corner of West Virginia we're proud to call home.

Founders, Shannondale Shortlist

We're Shannondale residents who got tired of the contractor guessing game and decided to do something about it. The Shortlist is our small contribution to a community we genuinely love. If you know a contractor who deserves to be here — or have feedback on how we can do this better — we'd love to hear from you.

Our Commitments to You

🤝
Honest Vetting

We're transparent about exactly what was and wasn't verified for every listing. No implied guarantees. No fine print surprises.

🚫
No Pay to Play

You cannot buy your way onto this list. Every listing is earned. Provider fees, if ever introduced, will never affect placement or badge status.

🏡
Community First

The Community Trusted tier exists because great local providers deserve to be found — even if they don't have a license or insurance on file.

📍
Genuinely Local

This is not a national platform with a local filter. It's built by people who live here, for people who live here.
