Transparency First

How the Shortlist
Really Works

We believe you deserve to know exactly how providers are vetted, what each badge means, and what we can — and can't — guarantee.

Three Levels of Trust

Every provider on the Shortlist falls into one of three tiers. Each tier is honest about what was verified and what wasn't.

Verified Pro

For licensed trades and formally operating businesses who have submitted documentation.

  • Application personally reviewed
  • License status checked where applicable
  • Certificate of insurance on file
  • References reviewed
  • Best for electrical, plumbing, HVAC & structural
Community Trusted

For neighborhood gems vouched for by real, named neighbors — no formal credentials required.

  • Minimum 5 verified neighbor endorsements
  • Named vouches on provider profile
  • Application reviewed for red flags
  • Licensing & insurance not verified
  • Best for lawn care, hauling, cleaning & general help
Founder's Pick

Reserved for providers personally hired and recommended by Lorelai & Michael. Rare by design.

  • Personally hired by the founders
  • Personal quote on every profile
  • Founders' reputation behind every pick
  • Never given lightly — intentionally rare
  • The highest trust signal on the Shortlist

What Happens After Someone Applies

1
Provider Submits an Application

Every provider fills out a detailed application covering their services, service areas, experience, credentials, and references. Community Trusted applicants also need a minimum of 5 neighbor nominations.

2
We Review It Personally

A real person — not software — reads every application. We look at the full picture: years in business, service area, how they describe their work, and whether anything raises a flag.

For Verified Pro applicants, we also:
  • Check WV contractor license status where applicable
  • Request and review a certificate of insurance
  • Contact at least one reference
  • Search for any public complaints or concerns
3
We Reach a Decision

We approve, ask for more information, or respectfully decline. Every applicant receives a personal response — we don't ghost providers any more than we want them to ghost homeowners.

4
Approved Providers Get Listed

Approved providers are added to the directory with the badges that reflect exactly what was verified. Nothing is implied beyond what's stated.

5
Ongoing Review

Listings aren't permanent. We check in annually, update insurance and license information, and take community concerns seriously. Providers who receive consistent complaints can be removed.

What Each Badge Means

⭐ Founder's Pick
Personally used and recommended by Lorelai & Michael

The rarest badge on the Shortlist. Given only to providers the founders have personally hired and would recommend to their closest friends and family. Every Founder's Pick includes a personal note explaining why.

✓ Verified Pro
Application reviewed, documentation submitted

This provider has gone through our full review process. Applicable to licensed trades. Does not imply guaranteed work quality — it means we've done due diligence on their credentials.

✓ Licensed & Insured
License checked and certificate of insurance on file

We have received and reviewed documentation at time of listing. Homeowners should always request a current certificate of insurance directly before work begins.

★ Community Trusted
Vouched for by 5 or more named community neighbors

This provider has earned genuine endorsements from real, named residents. Licensing and insurance are not verified for Community Trusted providers — this badge reflects community reputation, not credentials.

◆ Shannondale Resident
Verified Shannondale resident

This provider is a verified Shannondale resident — not just someone who serves the area from elsewhere. A meaningful distinction that reflects genuine community rootedness.

⟳ Responsive Pro
Known for reliable communication and follow-through

Earned based on community feedback about communication habits. Addresses the #1 homeowner frustration: contractors who don't respond or follow through.

⚡ Emergency Available
Willing to take urgent or emergency calls

Provider has indicated they are available for urgent situations. Availability not guaranteed — always call ahead for emergency situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Shortlist free for homeowners?
Yes — always. Browsing the directory, contacting providers, and using the Shortlist as a resource will never cost homeowners anything.
Can providers pay to be listed or ranked higher?
No. Listings are earned through the vetting process, not purchased. If we ever introduce optional provider fees in the future, they will never affect placement, badge status, or ranking in any way.
What if I have a bad experience with a listed provider?
Please contact us directly. We take community feedback seriously. Providers with consistent or serious complaints can be reviewed and removed from the Shortlist. We are not mediators and cannot resolve disputes — but we will always listen and act when the community's trust is at stake.
Does the Shortlist guarantee any provider's work?
No. The Shortlist is an informational directory. We do our best to vet providers honestly and thoroughly, but we cannot guarantee work quality, pricing, or outcomes. All agreements are directly between the homeowner and the provider.
How do I nominate someone for the Community Trusted tier?
Send us a message through the Contact page or post in our Facebook community group. We'll reach out to the provider and begin collecting the required neighbor endorsements.
How often are listings reviewed and updated?
We do a full review of all listings annually — updating insurance and license information, checking in with providers, and incorporating any community feedback received throughout the year.

5 Things to Do Before Hiring Any Contractor

Even with a trusted Shannondale Shortlist provider, your own due diligence always matters. Here's what we always recommend:

Shannondale Shortlist reviews contractor applications and collects documentation in good faith. Listings represent information provided at time of application and independently reviewed where possible. Shannondale Shortlist does not guarantee the quality, licensure, or performance of any listed provider. Homeowners are encouraged to verify credentials independently, request written contracts, and perform their own due diligence before hiring. All agreements and pricing are directly between the homeowner and the service provider.
